Visa's Canadian World Cup Numbers Are Real. The Word "Matchday" Is Doing a Lot of Work.
Issue 6 flagged this methodological caution directly. Visa's spending data is real - matchday spending up as much as 24.6 percent in Toronto and 12.7 percent in Vancouver against the comparable 2025 period - but it is scoped narrowly to matchday transactions. Sponsors and brands citing the figures in pitch decks should read carefully before extrapolating to season-long or corridor-wide impact. The word "matchday" is doing a lot of work in that sentence, and a matchday pop in a stadium-adjacent zip code is not the same thing as a corridor-level lift across a district's full operating week.

Whether any brand or district cites the Visa figures without the matchday qualifier in a public presentation - worth flagging if it happens, as a live example of the exact misreading Issue 6 warned about.
